UNDERSTANDING COMPLEX PTSD
What Is Complex PTSD?
Complex PTSD (CPTSD) is a trauma condition that can follow long-lasting or repeated harm, such as childhood abuse or neglect. The World Health Organization's ICD-11 lists it as its own diagnosis, which adds struggles with managing emotions, self-worth, and relationships to the usual PTSD symptoms. The DSM-5 does not list it separately, so many people have never heard the name for what they live with.
PTSD often follows a single event, with flashbacks, avoidance, and feeling on edge. Complex PTSD follows prolonged trauma and often adds deep shame, difficulty trusting people, and sudden emotional flashbacks. Treatment is similar in goals but is often longer and more paced. At PSG in Muncie, you decide what to share and when. If your symptoms follow one event, see our trauma therapy and PTSD treatment in Muncie. Sessions are available in person or by telehealth.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why Trauma Therapy Helps
Early and repeated hurt is far more common than most people realize, and its effects can reach into adult relationships, work, and self-worth. It is also treatable. Healing happens when the nervous system feels safe enough to process what happened, which is why trauma therapy starts with safety and coping skills before memory work. The table below shows how options compare. At PSG, treatment is paced to you.
Approach | What It Is | How Complex PTSD Therapy Is Different |
|---|---|---|
Coping Alone | Managing triggers and emotions without support. | Therapy builds grounding skills before any memory work begins. |
Medication Alone | Prescribed medication to ease symptoms. | Therapy addresses the roots of trauma and can work alongside medication. |
Phased Complex PTSD Therapy | Stabilization, EMDR memory work, then relationships and self-worth. | Trauma-informed care paced for safety, led by an EMDRIA Approved Consultant. |
Single-Incident PTSD Care | Treatment focused on one traumatic event. | Complex PTSD care addresses repeated or long-term trauma and its effects on identity. |
Standard Talk Therapy | Open-ended conversation about past experiences. | Complex PTSD care follows clear phases, starting with safety and stabilization. |
HOW IT WORKS
How We Treat Complex PTSD at PSG
Treatment is phased. First, you and your therapist build safety, stability, and coping skills. Next, when you feel ready, you process painful memories with EMDR or other evidence-based methods. Finally, you work on relationships, boundaries, and self-worth. You are never pushed into memories on day one, and you can slow down at any time. Treatment is usually many months of weekly sessions, and some clients add EMDR intensives once stabilization skills are in place.
