SUPPORT FOR WHAT YOU’RE GOING THROUGH

How First Responder Therapy at PSG Can Help

First responder therapy helps you process what you have seen, lower daily distress and rebuild balance on and off duty. Our first responder counselor at PSG works with the concerns that show up most often in emergency and service work:

Trauma and PTSD:

Flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive images from calls, avoidance, and feeling on edge long after an incident ends.

Burnout and occupational stress

Exhaustion, cynicism, and dread before a shift, driven by workload, schedules, and organizational pressure.

Sleep difficulties and hypervigilance

Trouble shutting down after shifts, staying on alert at home, and broken sleep.

Grief and loss

Grieving a colleague, a patient, or a call that did not end the way you wanted.

Secondary trauma and compassion fatigue:

The emotional cost of absorbing other people's pain, which can leave you drained or detached.

Burnout and occupational stress

Exhaustion, cynicism, and dread before a shift, driven by workload, schedules, and organizational pressure.

Emotional numbness and relationship strain

Feeling cut off from your partner, kids, or friends, or struggling to talk about the job.

Substance use as a coping tool

Our team includes Katie Buchanan, LMSW, who has experience helping people facing addiction, trauma, and crisis.

Counseling for first responders at PSG turns those concerns into practical goals: better sleep, calmer reactions, stronger relationships, and the ability to keep serving without losing yourself.

FIRST RESPONDER MENTAL HEALTH

Why Specialized Care Matters

First responder mental health is shaped by repeated exposure to trauma that most people never see. Stigma, fear of looking weak, and concerns about privacy keep many responders from asking for help. Therapy is one part of a wider support system. Here is how it compares with other options responders often use:

Support Type
What It Is
How Therapy Is Different
Peer support
Trained colleagues who listen and share experience
Therapy adds clinical assessment and evidence-based treatment
Critical incident stress management (CISM)
Short-term group or individual debriefing soon after a critical incident
Therapy continues over time and treats symptoms that persist
Employee assistance program (EAP)
Employer-sponsored counseling, often with a limited number of sessions
Private therapy is chosen by you and continues as long as you need it
Therapy at PSG
Ongoing, confidential treatment with a mental health clinician
Treats PTSD, anxiety, depression, burnout, and relationship strain directly

Built For Shift Schedules

EMDR Intensives For Busy Shift Schedules

EMDR intensives offer extended, highly focused EMDR over several hours or consecutive days instead of weekly sessions. They can be scheduled as half-day, full-day, or multi-day packages.

Half-day

Several focused hours

Full-day

A full day of EMDR

Multi-day

Consecutive days

Intensives Suit First Responders Who:

✓ Want to address trauma more quickly

✓ Have limited time for weekly appointments because of shift work

✓ Are preparing for or recovering from a major life transition

✓ Have plateaued in regular talk therapy

FOR SPOUSES, PARTNERS & FAMILY

Support For First Responder Families

The job affects everyone at home, so PSG offers first responder family support as part of our care. Spouses, partners, and other family members can receive therapy to cope with worry, irregular schedules, and changes they notice in a loved one. Our group therapy includes a group for family members of first responders, where you can connect with others who understand. Couples therapy with Molly Strauss, M.Ed., Ed.S., NCSP, helps partners rebuild communication and connection.

CHOOSING A CLINICIAN

Finding The Right First Responder Therapist

The right first responder therapist understands trauma, respects the culture of the job, and speaks to you directly. When you compare options, look for:

Trauma Credentials

Training in methods such as EMDR, CBT, and trauma-focused therapy.

Cultural Understanding

A clinician who knows shift work, cumulative trauma, & why responders hesitate for help.

A Direct Approach

Someone who will challenge you, not just listen.

Flexible Formats

In-person, telehealth, and intensive options that work around your schedule.

Clear Confidentiality

An honest explanation of what stays private.

Fit

The client-therapist connection is one of the main drivers of change in therapy.

Certified First Responder Counselor (CFRC) vs. EMDRIA Certification

TRAINING CERTIFICATE

CFRC

Some people search for a certified first responder counselor. The CFRC (Certified First Responder Counselor) is a training certificate focused on first responder culture and needs. It is one useful signal, alongside licensure, trauma training, and experience.

VS

THE TRAUMA CREDENTIAL TO KNOW AT PSG

EMDRIA Certification

At PSG, the trauma credential to know is EMDRIA certification, which reflects advanced training and consultation in EMDR. When you want a therapist first responders can trust, credentials and experience both matter.

PSG’s EMDR leadership also extends to other clinicians. Dr. Eubank consults with therapists around the world who are pursuing EMDR credentials. For clinicians, consultation with an EMDRIA Approved Consultant is part of advanced trauma therapy training and a required step toward EMDRIA certification, a recognized form of trauma certification for therapists.

CLEAR COSTS. PRIVATE CARE.

Cost, Insurance, and Confidentiality

Use your insurance or pay privately. Either way, every session is confidential.

OPTION 1

Use Your Insurance

OPTION 2

Private Pay

$125–$200

/ session

Fee-for-service and private-pay sessions cost $125 to $200, depending on the clinician, session length, and type of therapy.

Some clients choose private pay for added privacy or to avoid insurance limits on the number of sessions

There are no hidden fees

Superbills are available for out-of-network reimbursement

You can receive a Good Faith Estimate under the No Surprises Act

ALWAYS

Confidential Care

Every session takes place in a confidential, non-judgmental space. Like all mental health care, confidentiality has a few legal limits, such as immediate safety concerns; your clinician can walk you through them before you begin.
